The neuralgia (mentioned in this letter ) continued to lay me low at intervals. I remember rolling on the floor in agony, much worse than childbirth or a slipped disc! I gnawed on a table leg one night and the doctor sent me to various specialists . The last one was a psychiatrist …if in doubt it must be psychosomatic. I assures him that I was unhappy about the threat of Neuralgia poised ready to strike. Nina continued steadily working through my teeth. One day at the dental school Nina gave me an injection so that she could drill a wisdom tooth. It didn’t take effect so when she began drilling I grabbed her hand and pulled the drill out, tearing my tongue and lip …but she had discovered the source of the Neuralgia.
My Dear Joy,
For once it’s a beautiful and it seems like there’s a harbinger of Spring in the air. Quite a welcome change from the miserable, sunless days of the past few weeks. We’ve hardly had a real taste of Winter as yet-plenty of hard , dry frosts, but no snow to speak of. But its still early days yet with Feb, March and April still to come-plenty of time . Its lucky we’ve been , the present foretaste is a spur to soldier on to even sunnier days which are not too far away.
The economic winter which we find ourselves in is a different cup of tea-and the more’s the pity. Still, there’s little we can do about that and from my experience I’ve always found it best to say nowt-better than bashing our energy out against a concrete wall in futile efforts beyond our control. And meantime Father Time marches on and he won’t sell back lost time. Gather ye rosebuds while ye may-it’ll all clear in time.
By all this you’ll gather that I’ve nothing to write about, and that’s very true- I haven’t! We’re still jogging along in the self same style. Chris is back on his three day working week –ten thirty PM tomorrow Saturday and he doesn’t like that bit and he’s got a peel on tomorrow morning too. He told us however that he may soon be back on five days since his firm is having a generator installed[ American] . At the moment I ‘m trying my hand at making a nesting box for the blue-tits. I’m a very amateur carpenter though but I think I’ll make a presentable effort.
I’m still busy sawing wood up for fuel and this morning some more cases, big ones, came in so I’ll be fetching a couple of those on Monday. Last week I loaded a barrow full of wood and Chris took it up to Gran Cis’s and sawed it up for her. He also repaired the guttering on the roof of her cottage – a grand lad Chris when it comes to doing a good turn.
Thanks for your ever welcome-though it didn’t start off vey well. We were all very sorry to hear of your most unpleasant ordeal at the dentist’s . having experienced a similar trial myself I can well sympathise with you-it must have been-tooth apart- rotten for you. However, its over and done with now and a good job to. You know, metaphorically speaking , I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it wasn’t the root cause of all your neuralgia trouble which you had some time ago. Both mam and I thought as one that it was. If so, then it was a blessing indeed, wasn’t it. We’re both so very pleased that Mike is pushing along so well at his teaching . Seems like he is dedicated and enjoying it too. Working hard on the ’ lotment too, it makes a nice refreshing change and it brings its rewards later and pleasure all the way. Our regards to him and a line from him when he finds the time would be welcomed.
Yesterday mam had her accountants in-members to do the annual working year balance for the club. I made myself scarce –went to the library and then a call at Gran Cis’s
Handbell engagements still keep coming in and this week we had a request near to Burton –on- Trent. The ringers think this is too far and anyway I’ve a feeling that our long association will soon be ending. I’m worried about Percy Coe-that all is not well with him. For some time now his voice has been unnaturally rough and he’s had a very severe chill too. I hope that our fears are unfounded.
Glad your plants are thriving and they should give a welcome splash of colour unless Joey fancies they are edible.
Well now, I must away to get ready for church-it’s now Sunday. Hope that you have shaken off the effects of your dental ordeal-I still feel that it was the cause of your previous trouble . Love and Safe keeping and regards to Mike- Dad.
